Alternative investment is a generic term for investments that go beyond the normal stocks and bonds that you would typically see in brokerage accounts, it would include things like real estate investments, oil and gas investments, promissory notes, structured notes, things like that, that are outside of typical stock and bond investments that you would normally see in an investment account.
